COMITT (Conference on Marine Industry Technical Training)
COMITT Update

In 2007 and 2008, MITEC produced COMITT as a pre-conference at IBEX (The Internation BoatBuilders Exhibition and Conference) in Miami Beach. In 2010, IBEX will move to Louisville, Kentucky. For more information, click here.
Although MITEC will again take an active role in IBEX, we will not be offering another COMITT pre-conference in 2010. If you have comments about this decision, please enter them on this page, or send them to COMITT Chair, Barbara Jean Walsh at ProBoat E-Training.
As always, we depend on your recommendations as part of our planning process. If you have ideas for seminars that MITEC might produce for IBEX 2010, please enter them here.

Produced by MITEC (Marine Industry Training & Education Council), COMITT is an ideal opportunity for educators, employers, and others to explore and adopt methods, tools, and techniques that result in a stronger, more effective workforce. This year’s COMITT includes two dynamic workshops led by Valerie Ziebron of Yamaha University and VRZ Consulting, as well as a thought-provoking luncheon presentation by Volvo Penta President Clint Moore –and an evening of socializing and networking at Shake-A-Leg Miami’s waterfront facility in Coconut Grove.

Reception & Barbecue at Shake-A-Leg Miami
Shake-A-Leg Miami (SALM) invites all COMITT attendees to spend the evening at their beautiful waterfront facility, socializing and networking. Also, during the remainder of the week, attendees and their families will have access to the SALM waterfront to enjoy boating in Biscayne Bay.
Shake-A-Leg Miami helps children and adults with physical, developmental and economic challenges; liberating them from the realm of imagination into the realm of experience. The group has successfully created an inspirational haven, where people of all backgrounds and abilities find common ground. SALM is South Florida’s “Gateway to Biscayne Bay.”
In addition, Shake-A-Leg is working with Coral High School and Dade Marine to develop a track program designed to teach an array of skills for new workers (including veterans) who want to pursue marine-industry careers such as marine mechanics, fiberglass technicians, marine carpenters, yacht painters and more.
SALM’s continued partnership with the City of Miami, plus more than 100 community organizations, both public and private, is the ultimate confirmation of the power of unity and collaboration.

At the first COMITT in 2005, we built the foundation for an industry approach to providing quality marine technical education training and professional development by assembling a diversified mix of industry and education representatives who reached consensus regarding the approach and implementation of a nationally coordinated program.
COMITT ‘06 provided a forum where attendees could not only hear from speakers on how to uncover “resources for success,” but also meet, discuss ideas with and ask questions of the newly formed 22 member Marine Industry Technical Education Council (MITEC), an organization created as a result of COMITT ‘05.
The MITEC has not only come along way since COMITT ‘05, but it made much progress through the assistance and input of all our past conference attendees. MITEC will continue to make progress towards implementing a coordinated approach to addressing the education, training and professional development needs of our industry, and we look forward to the continued support and commitment of our industry and education representatives. Visit www.boatingcareerinfo.org for more information on MITEC.
COMITT ‘08 concentrated on strategies to recruit and retain marine-industry employees, addressing a workforce shortage that has become a severe problem in our industry. During the open networking session participants gained valuable insights into what they determined to be the top three problems attendees felt the industry faced: workforce availability, workforce competence, and workforce retention. Attendees then participated in targeted seminars and panel discussions, closing out the conference with a concluding networking session in which each attendee was asked to state one action item that he or she could put into play immediately.
